As we emerge from one of the most unusual periods in our history, we have learned how much we can achieve together, and how our efforts can benefit our communities and our forests. SFI has long been committed to sustainability, collaboration, and the robust values and benefits that come from forests.
Over the last year and a half, SFI and our network have innovated and adapted to keep focused on our mission to advance sustainability. The new SFI Forest Management Standard, SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard, and SFI Chain of Custody Standard were launched on Earth Day, and go into effect in January 2022. These standards are focused on addressing critical global challenges and include the new SFI Climate Smart Forestry Objective and SFI Fire Resilience and Awareness Objective.
Building on our belief that the next generation of forest and conservation leaders is critical to achieving our sustainability goals, Project Learning Tree and PLT Canada have developed new tools and resources to support career pathway development. For example, PLT refreshed the Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide, which includes hands-on activities that integrate investigations of nature with science, math, English language arts, and social studies and include positive career connections throughout.
SFI’s Board approved a new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy in 2021 to help guide our commitment to creating space for all communities to fully and meaningfully participate in the journey towards a sustainable future.
This last year showed us that working together to solve our future challenges is more important now than ever. Thanks to so many of you for your collaboration and leadership, and I look forward to many bright days ahead.
