CIF-IFC Offering a Teachers’ Forestry Tour for Educators and Teachers on Vancouver Island, BC

Nanaimo, BC  – Calling all teachers and educators in the Nanaimo area! If you are looking for a unique opportunity to bring forestry into your classroom, the Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada (CIF-IFC) is organizing a Teachers’ Forestry Tour and you are invited to register!Hosted in collaboration with the CIF-IFC Vancouver Island Section and Vancouver Island University (VIU), the Teachers’ Forestry Tour will take place on June 3, 2022 in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island.With funding in part from the Government of Canada, the CIF-IFC will be hosting and coordinating Teachers’ Forestry Tours across Canada over a two-year period (2021-2023).“We are excited to connect with educators and shine light on Vancouver Island’s forestry industry,” says Jillian MacDonald, CIF-IFC Vancouver Island Section Chair. “With the changing perception of forestry, this is a great opportunity for people to see the forest through the eyes of a forester and explain the process of how we maintain sustainability in a complex environment.”“The VIU Forest Resource Technology program would like to invite educators to explore opportunities of integrating forestry into the BC curriculum,” exclaims Andres Enrich, VIU faculty member. “Join us for the day and get some mud on your boots while we visit the VIU Woodlot.”Teachers and educators from all levels are welcome to attend. Through a mix of presentations and hands-on learning in the field, this tour offers a valuable professional development opportunity for teachers and educators. The tour will include an opportunity to meet professionals and practitioners in the field of forest science, research and management, and visit a forestry product mill.The tour will inform teachers about basic forestry concepts, including sustainable forest management, Indigenous participation in forestry and the links between forests and climate change.Formed in 1908, the CIF-IFC is the national voice of forest practitioners and many others with an interest in forestry and forests.
